Sir Michael John Gambon (19 October 1940 - 27 September 2023)

One of the most recognized actors from the popular film series Harry Potter died at age 82 after suffering from pneumonia.

His best-known role is perhaps that of Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts' headmaster in the third instalment of J. K. Rowling's franchise, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, taking over the role after the death of Richard Harris in 2002; Harris had also played Maigret on television four years before Gambon took that role. Gambon reprised the role of Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was released in November 2005 in the United Kingdom and the United States. He returned to the role again in the fifth film, 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He appeared in the final two films of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 in 2010 and Part 2 in 2011. Gambon told an interviewer that, when playing Dumbledore, he does not "have to play anyone really. I just stick on a beard and play me, so it's no great feat. I never ease into a role – every part I play is just a variant of my own personality. I'm not really a character actor at all."

In 2010, Gambon appeared in Tom Hooper's historical drama The King's Speech as King George V, alongside Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, and Guy Pearce. In 2011, the film received 12 Academy Awards nominations, more than any other film in that year. The film won four Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay.

Actor Gambon had many award nominations and also won several best actor awards during his career.

The BUEIFF (Buenos Aires International Film Festival) is an official qualifying competition of the of IMDb (USA). It aspires to transmit it in such a way that the impact causes a change in the viewer, small or large, but that from that moment on their appreciation will never be the same again. From our flagship annual festival that highlights new Asian and Asian American films to our year-round community screening events, the organization has grown from one run by volunteers in the film and local Asian American community to one of the premiere Asian American arts nonprofits in town.

Our mission of championing Asian and Asian American stories via media arts and empowering Asian Americans to explore opportunities in cinema continues as we expand to include more collaborations with our peer film festival organizations in North America, educational programs, an AA/PI filmmaker database, and film industry resources for creatives.

AAAFF programs speak to and enhance understanding of the AA/PI experience through film.

To support a better understanding of the complexity of our times through engaging the public in documentary media as an art form.

We're Committed To:

    Cultivating curiosity and critical thought
Promoting the intersection of actuality and artistic expression
Fostering a local and international community interested in non-fiction media

Our Mandate:

DOXA is presented by The Documentary Media Society, a Vancouver based non-profit, charitable society (incorporated in 1998) devoted to presenting independent and innovative documentaries to Vancouver audiences. The society exists to educate the public about documentary film as an art form through DOXA Documentary Film Festival, a curated and juried festival comprised of public screenings, panel discussions, public forums and educational programs. The 22nd annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival is scheduled for May 4–14, 2023; stay tuned for further details.

The Documentary Media Society is a founding member tenant of the 110 Arts Co-op which manages The Post at 750 office and studio facilities.

The Documentary Media Society is located on the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. We are immensely thankful for the opportunity to present challenging and affirming non-fiction media on these lands, which have been cared for by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ peoples in perpetuity. To work and live on stolen land requires consistent interrogation of given histories, systems and identities. We believe that documentaries can be an important tool in this process.

DOXA (pronounced dox'-ah) is a greek word meaning common belief or popular opinion.

SIFF believes in film's unique power to share original stories, diverse perspectives, and rich emotional journeys. Beginning in 1976 with the annual Seattle International Film Festival, then expanding into year-round programming, and our five-screen SIFF Cinema, we have offered experiences that bring people together to discover extraordinary films from around the world for nearly five decades. Our audiences allow us to take risks, host complex conversations, and truly appreciate film.

SIFF Cinema

Our three theaters, SIFF Cinema Egyptian, SIFF Cinema Uptown, and the SIFF Film Center, screen arthouse and mainstream films, the latest international works, one-of-a-kind special events, and festivals.

Seattle International Film Festival

SIFF hosts the annual Seattle International Film Festival— traditionally attracting nearly 150,000 attendees to celebrate films from more than 80 countries and regions around the world. Many of the features, short films, and documentaries we screen will not have a return to US cinemas, making it an amazing event to discover new and underrepresented voices and stories.

SIFF Education

We go beyond our screens to provide more opportunities for our community to be inspired by and learn from film and filmmakers. SIFF's education and engagement programs cultivate community and support lifelong learning, cultural literacy and creative expression. Through partnerships, we host a variety of special screenings and mini-festivals—many of which are open to the public at no charge.

Over the course of its 75-year history, the Locarno Film Festival has become one of the most important film events in the world, in one of the most charming locations. Situated between the lake and the mountains, every summer the entire Swiss-Italian city, in the heart of Europe, turns into the capital of international cinema, bringing the most innovative visions to the screen. It's eleven days of stars, new talents, professionals and, most importantly, the audience.

With each edition, the city and its Festival play host to thousands of people: viewers who, over the eleven days of the event, discover the hundreds of selected films across almost a thousand screenings, from morning to night. When Piazza Grande comes to life, the inimitable theater under the Locarno stars gives 8000 viewers the magic of a world premiere. The audience is in the Piazza, the films are on the screen and the stars are in the middle, split between the sky and the stage.

Situated between the Alps and Lake Maggiore, the region that houses the Festival is absolutely phenomenal. It's a place of endless discoveries in terms of landscapes and art, which make cinema one of the many forms of magic of the Locarno Film Festival, to be experienced over the course of eleven unforgettable days.
