Dir: Pier Paolo Pasolini

Italy, 1967, Italian, 104mins, DCP

Cast: Silvana Mangano, Franco Citti, Alida Valli

In this ancient Greek tragedy of Oedipus haunted by a prophecy to murder his father and marry his mother, Pasolini's transplantation of the myth is put under a very personal frame that interweaves his own memories with Sophocles' drama - andwith his cameo as a high priest. Connected to the contemporary world through an autobiographical prologue and epilogue, the ancient text is unfolded in desert settings with primitive grandeur, in a mood of solitude and ambivalence that underline the myth's psychological overtones - are we truly fated to our destinies?

Dir: Pier Paolo Pasolini

Italy, 1961, Italian, 117mins, DCP

Cast: Franco Citti, Franca Pasut, Silvana Corsini

Reaching beyond the humanist ethics that underpinned classic neo-realism, Pasolinis astonishing directorial debut is already amature statement on 're-sacralising' human existence. A powerful and moving work with the primordial links between violence and the sacred, the story anchors on a pimp from the poorest district of Rome who lives on the earnings of prostitutes, but faces his senseless demise ironically for his empathy with an innocent girl. Stridently lyrical, this truthful portrait of the misery and eros of the sub-proletariat embodies what Pasolini would later theoriseas his 'cinema of poetry.'

TIFF THEME

The Tokyo International Film Festival underwent a significant gear change as it relocated its main venues to the Hibiya, Ginza, and Yurakucho area; invited new programmers; and reorganized its sections. This year, TIFF aims to evolve further by enhancing the following elements.

1. The number of venues

In addition to last year's venues, the festival will be adding TOHO Cinemas Hibiya, which was accessible only for the previous Closing Ceremony; Marunouchi TOEI; and the Marunouchi Piccadilly theaters, all theaters where participants will be able to enjoy larger screens. The festival will also utilize the Marunouchi area as a venue for festival-related events.

2. The number of films

With the increase in venues, the festival will be able to increase the number of films screened in main sections, from 86 last year to 110 this year. Participants will be able to enjoy diverse movies from Japan and the world.

3. The number of international guests

For the past two years, the festival has been unable to invite many international guests due to the pandemic. This year, TIFF will start physically bringing back a large number of guests, enabling participants to interact with various filmmakers and industry figures from around the world.
(As of September 21st, the festival expects to invite over 60 guests from overseas, including Christian Jeune, Director of the Film Department and Deputy General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival.)

Over its ten-day period, the Tokyo International Film Festival will be showcasing the colorful wealth of works from the forefront of cinema. Audience members will be able to enjoy films that can only be seen in Tokyo today, from major blockbusters to arthouse films. Taking all of the above into account, TIFF further pledges to incorporate its 2022 motto, "Leaping Forward" in its delivery so that it can present an increasingly exciting, deep-reaching, and delightful festival to its audiences. Look forward to what TIFF has in store as it takes a giant leap forward to flourish in the post-COVID era.

35th TIFF's Visuals

Visual Supervisor: Koshino Junko

I believe film festivals haven't been associated with fashion until now, but this visual expands the horizons of the film festival. I feel this year will be very interesting. It feels like the energy repressed by COVID-19 will lead to an explosion. I'm looking forward to a creative explosion in fashion and film.
