Asia / Hong Kong CineFan Spring Program
January 08, 2024, 07:15:49 PM
Hong Kong CineFan reveals its 2024 winter program featuring female Hungarian film director Márta Mészáros.

'A woman wanting to make films was a joke.' Márta Mészáros can now blithely laugh at the sarcasm and censorship she faced during her trailblazing, six decade career. Being the first woman to direct a feature in Hungary, and the first female filmmaker to win the Golden Bear at Berlinale, she broke barriers in cinema hierarchies and secured herself in the pantheon of auteurs, with an achievement as remarkable as her ex-husband – the legendary filmmaker Miklós Jancsó – yet standing tall in her own distinctive voice in the history of cinema.

Spending a decade making documentaries, Mészáros honed her dynamic visual style, investing delicate nuances and subtle realism into her exploration of women's lives – in her own words, 'to tell their stories honestly.' Skillfully turning ordinary workplace and domestic chores into private, churning dramas, she places her characters under conflicts and dilemmas where they must make a decision on their own. From bearing a child out-of-wedlock to hiring a surrogate mother, and even giving birth on camera, the Hungarian director is fearless in obfuscating the boundaries between fiction and reality, addressing head-on sensitive and controversial subjects that few dare to challenge.

Mészáros looks at her characters through a minimalist yet discerning lens, almost like an innocent child – the visceral emotions across their faces are captured with exquisite close-ups and freeze frames, and their intense struggles are gently laid bare without value judgment but with a sympathetic caress. Yet she never forgets to quietly admire women's stamina and fiercely independent spirit, while piercing through the patriarchal manipulation and moral conservatism that her heroines are striving to resist. Despite being lauded as a pioneering feminist, Mészáros never recognises herself as such: 'I wasn't making films about feminism. I was making films about people.'

Astonishingly prolific, Mészáros' themes range from personal independence, female solidarity to reflection on history. In the electrifying characters played by Marina Vlady, Isabelle Huppert, Lili Monori and Zsuzsa Czinkóczi, some parts of her alter-ego can always be seen, referencing her childhood as an orphan, her formative years as an adopted daughter and her rise to become an acclaimed filmmaker. Her own life embodies women's gender and artistic emancipation, while intricately entwined with Eastern Europe's sociocultural transformation. In its masterful blends of the personal and the political interwoven with dreamlike memories, real and fictionalised newsreels, Mészáros' autobiographical 'Diary Trilogy', her most acclaimed work, displays a refined, sophisticated film language that merges her own suffering with her country's tragic history as it unfolded within her own lifetime, evoking agony and catharsis in equal measure.

Two of a Kind — Auto-Remakes by Master Filmmakers

Remakes have a history nearly as long as Western film culture itself. While some may consider it as proof of filmmakers running out of creative ideas, the master filmmakers do have distinct, strong reasons to revisit their story a second time, and all share one ultimate goal – elevating their own work to absolute perfection.

From silent to talkies, from sheer black and white to vibrant colour, from academy ratio to CinemaScope are among the justified reasons for reprising a film. The reincarnation not only represents technological advances in filmmaking, but also reflects the evolution of time – Ozu Yasujiro's Tokyo, where his rowdy children lived in his films, shifted from pre-war depression to post-war economic recovery; as Europe was sliding to warfare again, Abel Gance reiterated his indictment, taking the anti-war theme to new horizons through two highly stylised films. Julien Duvivier transposed his dance programme from French sensibility to American sensuality, mirroring the cultural difference and his own transformation after fleeing to Hollywood.

As censorship was relaxed alongside the progression of societies, films that were previously banned or forced to be excised can now return to the director's ideal version. Inagaki Hiroshi restored in The Rickshaw Man the heart-wrenching scene of his retrained confession of love; William Wyler created an unflinching adaption that stays true to its original theatrical version in The Children's Hour, without compromise on the homosexual innuendo onscreen. Yet, allusions and subtexts conceived to evade censorship still evoke an enchanting aura and pleasure that is unparalleled.

Just hours after Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment, IGN has learned that Marvel will not be moving forward with the Kang actor. Majors faces up to a year in prison after a jury on Monday found him guilty on one count of assault and one count of harassment, both misdemeanors.

It's currently unclear if Marvel will recast Kang, or scrap the character altogether. Variety previously reported that the studio was considering a pivot to Doctor Doom instead. In the meantime, the approach to the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, in which Majors would've obviously played a crucial role, remains in flux. Loki creator Michael Waldron was recently tapped to take over writing duties from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania scribe Jeff Loveness.

Things changed, however, after Majors was arrested on March 25 on charges of strangulation, assault, and harassment. After several delays, a trial began on December 4, during which his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari testified that he was abusive throughout their relationship, but focused on that March 25 incident. Jabbari said she took his phone after seeing a text from another woman, and Majors twisted her hands and arm in trying to pry it from her in the backseat of an SUV, and struck a blow to her head.

Video evidence revealed to the six-person jury also showed Majors and Jabbari leaving the vehicle, with Majors shoving her back into it.

While the jury found Majors guilty of the two counts of assault and harassment, they also acquitted him on two other counts: intentional assault in the third degree and aggravated assault in the second degree. Majors pleaded not guilty to all counts, and his legal team has long argued that Jabbari was the aggressor. In a statement obtained by IGN on Monday, his defense attorney Priya Chaudhry said that he "still has faith in the process and looks forward to fully clearing his name."

While Marvel cutting ties with Majors following the verdict isn't a huge shock (Disney had already removed the Majors-starring Magazine Dreams from its release schedule), it is confirmation of what will inevitably be a big shift for the studio's future plans. Marvel does, however, have some time to figure things out; the only MCU film set to release next year is Deadpool 3, followed by Captain America: Brave New World on February 14, 2025.

Is this the end of the career of a successful actor in Hollywood?

South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, has been found dead in an apparent suicide in central Seoul.

Police found the body of the actor, who was 48, in a car near a city park on Wednesday. They believe Lee took his own life, Yonhap news agency reports.

Police said earlier they had received a report that he had left his home after writing a note.
He had been under investigation for alleged illegal drug use since October. Lee's body was taken to Seoul National University Hospital after police located his car near Waryong Park. Reports say his family have refused an autopsy and he will be buried on Friday.

Police have begun an investigation to establish the details around his death, including when he arrived at the scene where his body was found, and the time of his death.

In Parasite, Lee played the patriarch of the wealthy Park family which is infiltrated by members of a poor family posing as unrelated individuals. The vicious social satire won four Oscars, including best picture.

Yonhap reported that he was suspected of taking drugs such as marijuana and ketamine with a hostess at a bar in Seoul. He had said that though he took what she gave him, he had not known that they were illicit drugs. The hostess had reportedly told the police that he used drugs at her home multiple times - something he denied. He had earlier requested through his lawyer to take a lie detector test.
His drug tests had returned negative or inconclusive results, the report added. Police said they regretted that Lee had died in the midst of investigations, but that the inquiry had been "conducted with [his] consent", News1 Korea reported. Lee underwent three rounds of questioning, with one session last Saturday lasting 19 hours, according to Yonhap. Lee's agency, HODU&U Entertainment, said in a statement: "There is no way to contain the sorrow and despair. We respectfully ask that you refrain from spreading false facts based on speculation... so that [Lee's] final journey will not be unfair."
News of his death sparked strong reactions online.

Lee is not the only South Korean celebrity who had been investigated for drug use recently. Earlier this month, K-pop star G-Dragon was cleared of drug allegations after weeks of investigations.
Actor Yoo Ah-in is currently standing trial for drug use.

News & Media / Hong Kong Film Disqualified at the Oscars
December 15, 2023, 07:03:31 PM
The Hong Kong film directed by Anastasia Tsang was disqualified from the Oscar's list due to an unfortunate incident.

Despite the outcome, producer Saville Chan told Screen: "It's not what we wanted to happen, but now is not the time to point fingers. It sounds like a procedural thing over the submission regulations. More importantly, we should address the issue and won't let this happen again to ensure that well-deserved Hong Kong films can be rightfully submitted to the Oscars in the future."

There had been a question mark over Hong Kong's inclusion for several weeks when the submitted film did not appear on the list of titles seen by Academy voters. However, the production team behind A Light Never Goes Out only learned the fate of their film when the Federation issued an official statement yesterday (December 11) about the "rare and regrettable" disqualification.

According to the Chinese-language statement, the Federation followed the same procedures as in previous years to select the film. The Federation's long-time chairman, Crucindo Hung, revealed further details to Hong Kong's iCable news channel yesterday.

Hung said the selection committee originally comprised 19 members but that a new group was formed after the Academy revised its entry regulations in August, which ruled out members who had served on the Federation's board for more than six years. However, the Federation was notified a month ago that one of the 13 members of the new committee had a conflict of interest.

"One of the actors [from the committee] is a lead in A Light Never Goes Out so has a conflict of interest and is not allowed to vote," said Hung. "This has never happened before. In the past, the 19 members of the selection committee were also from the industry, including producers, actors, actresses, directors, gaffers and cinematographers. Some of the films starred or were produced or directed by them. It has never been disallowed before."

Hung added that if the vote from the actor was not counted, A Light Never Goes Out would have still received the highest number of votes. When the Federation asked whether they could do so, the Academy refused and requested an alternate submission. The Federation declined, deeming it unfair to A Light Never Goes Out.

"I truly welcome Tricia Tuttle, a female artistic director of the Berlinale. I think it was time that one of the big festivals has a woman as the leading person. So cheers to that!" said producer Janine Jackowski, co-founder of Komplizen Film whose production of Nadav Lapid's Synonyms won the Golden Bear in 2019.

This sentiment was shared by Christine Berg, president of the German exhibitors association HDF Kino. "Tricia Tuttle has an outstanding reputation as an expert in the international festival business and, together with the experienced Berlinale team, she will further strengthen this renowned and extraordinarily important festival for Germany," she said.

Christian Bräuer, wearing all of his three hats as managing director of Berlin's Yorck-Kino chain of cinemas, chairman of the AG Kino - Gilde arthouse cinemas association and president of CICAE, pointed out the future Berlinale director "knows all sides of the industry including the creative side of production as well as distribution and festivals. She is regarded as a great team player, a very passionate woman with a positive character. That's what we need at the Berlinale and we are looking forward to working with her."

"I know the arthouse sector in the UK will be sad to lose her," Bräuer added. "I have heard only very good things from the colleagues at the Watershed [Media Centre in Bristol] where she has been a board member. They are pleased for us and for her."

Slamdance Film Festival has announced the roster for its upcoming 30th anniversary edition

Running January 19-25 in person and January 22-28 online, this year's event returns to Yarrow Hotel in Park City where the festival launched and will showcase 32 features, of which 17 are world premieres, as well as 75 shorts, and five episodics.

Festival organisers said this year's event is more diverse than prior iterations with 43% of the films by BIPOC creators and 43% by female or non-binary filmmakers. The selection hails from 20 countries and the programming team received more than 9,000 submissions, 1,729 of which were features.

As in previous years, all films selected in the Narrative Features and Documentary Features competition categories are directorial debuts without US distribution and were budgeted at under $1m.

Selections include Antonis Tsonis's Brando With The Glass Eye (Gre-Aus) about a method actor who commits a botched heist before a big audition; Fabio D'Orta's The Complex Forms (It) about a group of desperate people who have sold their bodies to unknown creatures; and Hadley Austin's documentary Demon Mineral (USA) about uranium mining on sacred land.

Among the programme are The Death Tour (Can) from Stephan Peterson and Sonya Ballantyne, a documentary which follows wrestling hopefuls across remote Indigenous communities in Canada's Far North; and Bill Plympton's Slide, a surreal musical animated western dubbed as the result of a film Clint Eastwood and Mel Brooks might make if they became cartoonists.

"Our 2024 Slamdance lineup is a testament to filmmakers who dare to push their stories to the very edge of filmmaking, making it deeply personal yet globally resonant," said festival director Taylor Miller. "Their raw passion and risk-taking echo our commitment to exploring uncharted territories of cinematic expression. This year, we proudly host the most inclusive and accessible festival we've ever had, staying true to the core objectives I aimed to cultivate with our programmers when I took this job."

Slamdance heads also announced the line-up for the fourth annual Unstoppable programme, a showcase of new films by creators with visible and non-visible disabilities. This section will be headquartered at the University of Utah in the Student Union Theater from January 22-24 with subsequent screenings at the Yarrow. Kyrgyzstan declines Oscar invitation after international entry rejection

Kyrgyzstan's Oscar selection committee has turned down the US Academy's request to submit another title for the international feature film category following the rejection of Aktan Arym Kubat's This Is What I Remember.
The film from the Central Asian country did not make the final list as its release date fell outside the Academy's release window.
According to Oscar regulations, international feature film submissions must have received a local release between December 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023 in order to qualify. However, This Is What I Remember opened on November 18, 2022. It continued to screen in cinemas until April this year.

It was not possible to enter the film into last year's Oscars as the submission deadline was October 3, before the film's world premiere in competition at the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival on October 27, and proof of a local theatrical release was required to qualify for the Oscar category.
"We hadn't yet planned the release and didn't have any proof or even advertisement of upcoming release so we wouldn't have been able to apply," said producer Altynai Koichumanova.
"We decided to apply for the 2024 Oscars, but we didn't know about the regulations, and we didn't know that if we made the release before December 1, 2022, we would not qualify. Our mistake was that we had to guess what would be next year's [2024] regulations."
This Is What I Remember is a co-production between Kyrgyzstan, Japan, the Netherlands and France. Director Kubat plays an old man who has lost his memory and returns to Kyrgyzstan for the first time in more than 20 years. The film won the jury grand prize at last year's Asia Pacific Screen Awards and is the final film of a trilogy that began with The Light Thief and Centaur, both of which were submitted to the Oscars in 2010 and 2017 respectively.
"It's a real pity that a film by a filmmaker of such stature in world cinema like Aktan Arym Kubat is deemed ineligible under the way this current system is designed," said Mai Meksawan of Diversion, the Bangkok-based sales agent of the film.

"It shouldn't have been the producer's burden to have to plan this in advance even before the world premiere at Tokyo, and 18 months before the Oscars ceremony date.
"In other countries like Thailand, the international feature Oscars has become a marketing tool for studios to schedule the local release right within next year's deadline and use the 'Country's Pick for Oscars' to promote that release."
It would have marked the fifth film by Kubat - also known as Aktan Abdykalykov - to have been considered by Oscar voters after The Adopted Son, The Chimp, The Light Thief and Centaur.
Neighbouring country Tajikistan also did not make this year's final list after making a rare entry with Behrouz Sebt Rasoul's Melody.
Countries submitting a feature for the first time, or who have not submitted for the previous five years, must present a list of selection committee members and application materials for the Academy. Screen understands that Tajikistan could not send that list on time, ruling it out of the running.

The film is received its international premiere at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa today (November 24).

Philadelphia Asian American Film & Filmmakers was founded in 2008 by a passionate group of Asian Americans who felt a need for a festival space that was focused on supporting the growing Asian filmmaking community. The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival (PAAFF) is the showcase event of this non-profit organization and is dedicated to supporting and highlighting the experiences of Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora through creative community-focused programs. PAAFF is currently the third-largest film festival of its kind in the United States. In addition to our film programs, our volunteer-run organization also presents supporting programming such as live performances, chef demonstrations, panels and lectures, and educational workshops during the festival and throughout the year.

Our Mission: The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival aims to serve as a platform to showcase and celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora storytellers and their works. In order to build a more inclusive and informed community, we collaborate with other like-minded organizations that support this mission.

Our Vision: We believe in celebrating and propelling the voices of Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora storytellers and creators to the forefront of culture by serving as a platform for them to share their vision with the world through film, theatre, and live performance.

Is it strange that three of the Asian American features this year have the word "home" in their titles? Or that films from around the world, whether AGRA from India or CONCRETE UTOPIA from South Korea, or the classics THE FALL OF THE I-HOTEL and HITO HATA and the contemporary HOME IS A HOTEL, are explicitly about housing crises, real and imagined? Housing is on the mind, especially in a city recently named by US News & World Report as the country's most expensive city to live in. Asian and Asian American cinemas are traditionally obsessed with family, but today we can't take for granted the houses, condos, and SROs that provide the shelter and stage our domestic narratives.

This year's San Diego Asian Film Festival has a new home. After 22 wonderful years at the Hazard Center in Mission Valley, we were briefly swept asea, a consequence of Hollywood shuffles made complicated by the WGA and SAG strikes. But now we are back ashore, the new tenants of the grand Edwards Mira Mesa, in one of San Diego's most vibrant Asian neighborhoods. In a city where rent is high and movie theaters take up prime real estate, we're grateful to be here in the heart of what they call "Manila Mesa," across the street from an H Mart and by a Banh Mi Blvd. So welcome in – shoes optional – cozy up to a film and make yourself at home.

BFI London Film Festival recorded its highest in-person attendance in five years with 195,665 attendees this year

The last edition to record more attendees was in 2018, with 205,630. The festival's occupancy levels were at an impressive 90% across its London paid-for and free in-person screenings – up from 87% last year and 84% and 83% in 2018 and 2019 respectively. 54% of ticket bookers this year were new to LFF, indicating a new generation of film audiences discovering the festival.

A further 225,577 attendees participated in the 2023 festival online. Delegate numbers were also up by 12%, from 3,254 last year to 3,649 this time, for the industry programme hosted at London's Picturehouse Central cinema. The festival has also unveiled its audience awards for the 2023 edition. George Amponsah's London-set crime thriller Gassed Up, produced by the UK's Sunrise Films and Ascendant Fox, took the audience award for best feature, having had its world premiere at LFF. Chloe Abrahams' debut The Taste Of Mango, looking at the filmmaker's family history, won the documentary audience award.

Further audience prizes went to short film Festival Of Slaps, a reflection on African parenting stereotypes, for best British work; and Murals, which juxtaposes the war in Ukraine with the murals of Banksy, for best immersive/XR.

"It was an absolute joy seeing audiences enthusiastically connecting to this year's programme which was beautifully handcrafted by our talented festival team," said Kristy Matheson, in her first year as BFI London Film Festival director. "Over 12 days we saw audiences coming together and being rewarded for their curiosity and fandom across the full breadth of what the moving image has to offer. UK artists shone bright across the whole programme, alongside some of international cinema's greatest legends and exciting new talents; our sincere thanks to them for sharing their supreme creativity with us all."

More than 800 UK and international filmmakers and immersive creators attended the festival, which features 252 titles from 92 countries across features, shorts, XR works and series. 39% of the works came from female and non-binary filmmakers.

The festival announced its 2023 awards on the closing weekend, with Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Evil Does Not Exist taking the best film award in official competition.

Jerzy Skolimowski—An Existential Quest for Liberty

In a letter, Jean-Luc Godard famously described two figures as the greatest directors in the world: himself, and Jerzy Skolimowski.

While Skolimowski claimed he had not seen any of Godard's films at the time he began his career as a director, his approach to filmmaking can be easily drawn parallels with the French New Wave giant: they both experiment with cinematic forms and reinvent new sets of film language. The near-miraculous combination of revolutionary aesthetics, meticulous mise-en-scene and instinctive improvisation found in Identification Marks: None, Walkover and Barrier displays the same creative impulse and independent spirit as Breathless and Band of Outsiders, though their deliverables are totally different.

Living under the communist regime, Skolimowski emerged as one of the most original voices of the Polish New Wave. Before entering Łódź Film School, he was enlisted by Andrzej Wajda to tweak the script of Innocent Sorcerers, and later collaborated with Roman Polanski on his 1962 debut feature Knife in the Water. Refusing to conform to the mainstream and censorship, he channeled his prodigious talents – as an actor, playwright, poet, painter, jazz drummer and even boxer – into a series of visually imaginative and poetically structured films that capture the ambiguous, restless and flailing vibes of the postwar generation, exemplified in his Andrzej Leszczyc trilogy. More than self-contemplation, these disillusioned portraits offer a wider reflection of the absurd reality at large, enshrouding political allegory and incisive social critique under surreal imagery.

The censorship and controversy surrounding Hands Up! in 1967 prompted Skolimowski to leave Poland and be exiled to Britain. His work became more diverse under the free rein, helming iconic films such as Deep End and Moonlighting which won high international acclaim. After a 17-year hiatus working as a professional painter in the 1990s, he made an incredible return to cinema with the extolled Four Nights with Anna. Together with Essential Killing, Skolimowski creates wildly daring portrayals of victims of circumstances, delving into the depths of the soul through wry yet poignant tales about obsession and survival. His meditative study of man and the world reaches new heights with EO, a masterful blend of fascination, empathy and violence that transcends a donkey's suffering into aching beauty.

This year, the late Godard realised his longstanding ambition in Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: Phony Wars; it's a fair prediction that Skolimowski will continue to stun us with his enduring passion for cinema.

Talks between SAG-AFTRA and Alliance Of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) concluded on Tuesday and are scheduled to continue on Wednesday.

In a message to members on Tuesday night on the 103rd day of its work stoppage, the actors union said: "Today, the CEOs came back to the table. We are scheduled to continue talks with them tomorrow.

"We will continue to provide updates with you directly. Remember – don't believe anything you read in the press unless it comes directly from us.

We promote representation, diversity and inclusion to broaden the narrative of who is American, and to strengthen and build community.
