Film Making / Hong Kong boosts film funds
Last post by FWN Adm - January 18, 2025, 06:41:26 PM
The "Film Production Financing Scheme 2.0", which was launched January 15 will see government support increased from $1.15m (HK$9m) to $1.28m (HK$10m) per project. Eligible projects will be provided with the maximum financing amount equivalent to 40% of the approved production budget but no more than $1.28m (HK$10m). Production budget must not exceed $3.2m (HK$25m). Bigger portion of the funding will be disbursed at an earlier stage to improve the cashflow of the production. A total of 70% of the government funding, up from 50% previously, will be disbursed upon commencement of principal photography.

The original Film Production Financing Scheme (Relaxation Plan) was introduced in mid-July 2020 during the Covid pandemic to create job opportunities and revitalise the local film industry. It was well-received by the industry and funded 23 film production projects, including Jack Ng's A Guilty Conscience, which set a record as the first ever local film to reach $12.8m (HK$100m) at the Hong Kong box office, making it the highest-grossing Chinese film in Hong Kong in 2023.

Enhanced measures also include an increased quota for applicants and main financiers, up from two to four; and investors given the priority to recoup half of their investment to encourage their investment and reduce their risk.

Recent releases such as Philip Yung's PAPA and Jill Leung's LAST SONG FOR YOU were both funded under the Relaxation Plan took in more than $2.7m (HK$21m) and $1.2m (HK$9m) respectively following their December releases.

"The optimised Financing Scheme 2.0 will further enhance the attractiveness of the financing scheme and provide a strong boost to the film industry," said HKFDC chairman Wilfred Wong. "I believe that it will bring positive and active developments in volume and genre diversity in future film productions."

While the overall box office for 2024 dropped 6.2% to $172.7m (HK$1.34bn) – the lowest in 13 years – local productions surpassed the market share of Hollywood and overseas titles by 5.5% for the first time since 2004. This was mainly driven by two record-breaking hits, Soi Cheang's Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In and Anselm Chan's The Last Dance, which were the second and third local films to cross the milestone of HK$100m ($12.8m).

News & Media / Vietnamese horror film THE COR...
Last post by FWN Adm - January 18, 2025, 06:26:24 PM
Nhat Trung's THE CORPSE is set to receive the biggest ever 'day and date' opening for a Vietnamese film. The feature will open in six territories worldwide on March 7, including the US, Australia, South Korea and Vietnam.

The story follows a couple who unleash a terrifying chain of events based around a cursed silver bracelet and a vengeful spirit after unearthing an ancient tomb on their land. Vietnam's rich traditional funeral customs are featured, blending cultural significance with modern storytellling.

A simultaneous release is scheduled in Vietnam, South Korea, the US, Taiwan, and Australia and New Zealand. In Q2, the film will receive a release in Southeast Asia through Westec Media and includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Vietnamese horrors have been thriving locally and abroad. Last year, local horror Ma Da became a smash hit ranking as the third highest grossing local film in 2024 and the biggest local horror of all time in Vietnam. It also became the biggest Vietnamese film in Taiwan, taking $350,000.

News & Media / Fires Broke out in Hollywood H...
Last post by FWN Adm - January 09, 2025, 08:05:27 PM
Raging wildfires surrounding Los Angeles spread to the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday, after five other fires in the area killed at least five people, destroyed hundreds of homes and stretched firefighting resources and water supplies to the limit. More than 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate as dry, hurricane-force winds hindered firefighting operations and spread the fires, which have burned parched terrain almost unimpeded since they began on Tuesday.

A new fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday evening, forcing more evacuations and raising to six the number of wildfires burning in Los Angeles County. The LA Fire Department issued an evacuation order for people in an area within Hollywood Boulevard to the south, Mulholland Drive to the north, the 101 Freeway to the east and Laurel Canyon Boulevard to the west - all iconic addresses for people in the entertainment industry. Within that area is the Dolby Theater, where the Oscars are held. Next week's Oscar nominations announcement was already postponed by two days because of the fire, organisers said.
