North America / Toronto Film Festival reveals ...
Last post by FWN Adm - July 25, 2023, 05:15:45 PM
Toronto International Film Festival unveiled a further 60 selection of films on Monday after previously announcing Taikia Waititi's Searchlight Pictures underdog football story Next Goal Wins, and Ladj Ly's Les Indésirables, and Atom Egoyan's Seven Veils - both of which are available for the US. XYZ Films handles world sales on Seven Veils and Goodfellas is selling Les Indésirables.

All selections are subject to change. The ongoing Hollywood double strike has cast uncertainty over whether talent will attend fall festivals and TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey told Screen last week that he and his team are deep in talks "film by film, person by person" to ensure as many of the selections as possible attend the festival running September 7-17.

The first wave of TIFF selection features 37 world premieres, seven international premieres, 12 North American premieres, and four Canadian premieres. Bailey said the selections "showcase a rich tapestry of talent, vision, and storytelling" and said attendees should prepare themselves for a "star-studded festival, showcasing the best of global cinema for film lovers in September".

Anna Kendrick (Woman Of The Hour, formerly The Dating Game), Michael Keaton (Knox Goes Away), Chris Pine (Poolman) and Ethan Hawke (Wildcat) are four US stars and SAG-AFTRA members with feature directorial debuts receiving world premiere slots at TIFF. Kristin Scott Thomas makes her debut behind the camera on North Star starring Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller, and Viggo Mortensen returns for his second stint as director with The Dead Don't Hurt after 2020 TIFF selection Falling.

The selection includes Unicorns from Sally El Hosaini (who directed TIFF 2022 opening film The Swimmers) and James Krishna Floyd; Anant Tucker's mystery comedy The Critic with Gemma Arterton, Ben Barnes, Ian McKellen, Leslie Manville and March Strong; Mahalia Belo's The End We Start From starring Jodie Comer and Benedict Cumberbatch; Thea Sharrock's comedy Wicked Little Letters from Studiocanal, Film4, Blueprint Pictures and South Of The River Pictures, which it was announced today will open in the UK on Fenruary 24 2024; and Dominic Savage's drama Close To You starring Elliot Page.

In the Making / MORTAL KOMBAT 2
Last post by FWN Adm - July 24, 2023, 06:16:44 PM
Mortal Kombat 2 is an upcoming American martial arts fantasy film directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, based on the video game franchise Mortal Kombat created by John Tobias and Ed Boon. The film serves as the sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat and as the fourth installment in the Mortal Kombat film series.

Following the release of Mortal Kombat in April 2021, producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director Simon McQuoid began conversations about the future of the franchise, including standalone films focused on Johnny Cage and Bi-Han, and a sequel to the 2021 film. Some cast members and crew expressed interest in returning to a sequel and in 2021, news outlets reported the studio was planning to develop other installments in the Mortal Kombat franchise. By 2022, Warner Bros. had green-lit the sequel, with Slater set to pen the screenplay and McQuoid returned to direct the project. Filming began in June 2023, in Australia but production was halted because of its use of SAG actors or in solidarity with the rest of the industry on strike and resuming after the strike again.

Cast as follows:
Lewis Tan as Cole Young
Karl Urban as Johnny Cage
Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs
Tadanobu Asano as Raiden
Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
Chin Han as Shang Tsung
Joe Taslim as Bi-Han / Noob Saibot
Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion
Josh Lawson as Kano
Max Huang as Kung Lao
Tati Gabrielle as Jade
Adeline Rudolph as Kitana
Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn
Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod
Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel
Damon Herriman as Quan Chi

Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures most likely around November 2024.

News & Media / MORTAL KOMBAT 2 new actors rev...
Last post by FWN Adm - July 24, 2023, 05:39:28 PM
Although the production of Mortal Kombat 2 are on hold due to strikes in the film industry some new actors are already selected to play the character for the film: Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and Tati Gabrielle as Jade and it has been also revealed that Adeline Rudolph will be playing Kitana, a popular character whose first appearance in the franchise dates back to 1993's Mortal Kombat II arcade game.

This isn't the first video game adaptation to bring in Rudolph, as she previously played the daughter of Albert Wesker in Netflix's short-lived Resident Evil series. She is also known for playing Agatha in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and had a recurring role in Riverdale. On the film side, Rudolph is also set to the upcoming comic book adaptation Hellboy: The Crooked Man from director Brian Taylor.

Simon McQuoid returns to direct Mortal Kombat 2 after helming the previous film. Jeremy Slater is writing the screenplay for the sequel. It's expected that some cast members from the original film will return, with Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero looking like a lock considering he's signed on to appear in up to five movies in that role. Chances are other actors like Jessica McNamee (Sonya), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), and Lewis Tan (Cole Young) will also be returning.

While still down 18% since the beginning of the pandemic in 2019, China's new box office results show that people are getting back to the theaters again. Lost In The Stars was also the first film of the summer to cross the RMB1bn mark and the third of the year to date, behind Chinese New Year hits Full River Red and The Wandering Earth II. The local feature beat out Hollywood blockbusters Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, which ranked second and third in June. Although an increasing number of US features have been approved for release, none have yet to cross the RMB1bn mark. Lost In The Stars is adapted from 1990 Russian film A Trap For A Lonely Man and revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a woman during a vacation with her husband.
