Indonesia's new animation film becomes top box office attraction and making it to the top on Southeast Asia's highest grossing animation films.

Jumbo is a 2025 Indonesian animated adventure supernatural fantasy film directed by Ryan Adriandhy in his directorial debut, from a screenplay he wrote with Widya Arifianti. The film features the voice of Prince Poetiray as Don, a boy who attempts to stage a play in a local talent show after feeling underestimated by his peers.

The country's hit animated feature has now surpassed 3 million admissions after 14 days of release. The previous most-viewed homegrown Indonesian animated film had only 642,000 admissions. The success of Jumbo is indicative of the growing demand for non-Hollywood animation in Southeast Asia that reflects local culture, traditions, and values.

Currently, Jumbo is the 22nd most-popular title of all-time in the country and also has the potential to go much higher. The film had nearly 480K admissions on April 7, its 14th day of release - this is the best day yet of its theatrical run. Wherever it ends up, the film is already a huge hit and heralds a new age for animation in the world's fourth-most-populous country.

THE STORY

Don, a 10-year-old orphan, is often underestimated because he has a large body. Don has a storybook inherited from his parents, which is full of illustrations and magical stories. The book is not only a souvenir, but also a source of inspiration and escape for Don from a world that feels unfriendly because he is often underestimated by his friends.

Don tries to prove his ability by joining a talent show, where he plans to perform a stage play inspired by a storybook his parents left him, but a friend steals the book, leaving him in despair. Luckily, Don always has the support of his Grandma and his friends, Nurman and Mae. In the midst of despair, Don meets Meri (a mysterious little fairy) who asks for his help in finding her parents. He then tries to get back the book he inherited. This meeting begins a magical adventure that begins, changing Don's view of himself, teaching him the meaning of true friendship, courage, and self-confidence, and strengthening the bonds of newly formed friendships.
